A year or two ago Mutt and I drove down to a dock a couple of hours from our respective places to see this awesome missionary ship before it got decommissioned. Having nothing else to do but let the car do all the work, we started talking about our ideas... as we always do. What followed was perhaps nothing short of the best brainstorming session we'd ever had.

See, it turns out that a long car trip is like crack for your creativity. You have a sense of purpose in trying to get somewhere, but that doesn't require much concentration. So you're free to brainstorm free of distractions, or just to sit there and mull over things quietly with no pressure to talk. Andrew Stanton and Bob Peterson of Pixar fame would do this when they were stuck on Finding Nemo, driving all the way down to L.A. instead of flying.
So if you've got a creative mate and you're stuck for inspiration, pick an ice cream parlour a good few hours away and start driving. Just... be sure you can afford the fuel.

I remember my own car trips with Helmutt, it always felt like we where hosts to our own talk back radio show. Those conversations where pretty delicious.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, yes! I remember them fondly... and hesitantly.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I don't need this mental image...
